UC Carbon Neutrality Applied Research – Call for Proposals

To the UC Research Community:

The University of California Office of the President has invited budget requests for the 2021 – 2022 fiscal year for projects supporting priorities of the UC Global Climate Leadership Council. While the total funding amount is unknown at this time, we expect that a total of $900,000 to $1.5 million may be available for the CNI overall, a portion of which is anticipated to be available for applied research projects supporting the 2025 carbon neutrality goal and related deep decarbonization and negative emissions goals for California, the nation and world.

Please share the accompanying Call for Proposals issued by the UC Carbon Neutrality Applied Research Working Group with relevant research stakeholders at your institution. Note that an initial Letter of Intent is due on July 20, 2020, including high level budget information, in accordance with the specified guidelines. Further information is available here. Based on the Working Group evaluation of the Letters of Intent, a limited number of applicants will be invited to submit full proposals for blind review due the week of August 31, 2020.

Timeline:

  • June 30, 2020: Dissemination of Call for Proposals (Letters of Intent)
  • July 20, 2020: Receipt of letter of intent and pillar submission to ARWG
  • Week of August 17th (TBA): Invitations to submit modified / revised proposals
  • Week of August 31: Submission of full proposals (a submission portal will be provided)
  • October 1, 2020: External review complete and rank-ordered submission to
    GCLC leadership
  • February 15, 2021: GCLC Announcement of funding decisions
  • July 1, 2021: Funding confirmation, commencement of project
