Public Impact

As the premier interdisciplinary, applied environmental, health and climate research unit at UC Davis our public impact is core to who we are and what we do. To further our impact, we have drawn on established relationships to enhance the number and diversity of people affiliated and supported by Institute of the Environment. In the past five years, our researchers, students, and staff have published over 1,200 peer reviewed publications in diverse, interdisciplinary and high impact venues and has been awarded over $67 million in competitive grants and contracts.

To do this work, we partner with diverse groups and stakeholders including community organizations, local and municipal governments, state agencies and offices, foundations, industry and the federal government. We translate research into public impact to strengthen our communities, foster resilience, and train the next generation of leaders, scholars, and practitioners.

The Institute works to translate research into public impact by integrating research, teaching and public outreach and engagement in alignment with the University’s strategic plan, To Boldly Go. The Institute advances public impact through the following strategic imperatives;

  • Cultivate experiential educational experiences across ecosystems, nature, and health.
  • Enable, support, and enhance applied environmental and climate research that matters.
  • Sustain inclusive excellence across our research, education, and outreach activities.
  • Develop and maintain impactful partnerships across the university, government, philanthropy, and the public.
  • Create and sustain a vibrant, thriving intellectual and physical environment conducive to rigorous research and the pursuit of knowledge.
