The PPOD (Persons-Projects-Organizations-Datasets) Data Pattern

The Center For Conservation Informatics has been developing infrastructure around a data pattern that we term PPOD, named for Persons-Projects-Organizations-Datasets. In our work in environmental data management, we have repeatedly observed a pattern where groups collect information on persons, projects, organizations, and datasets. Seeing this, we have developed a number of data schemas, vocabularies, and ontologies to help express the interrelationships between these core data classes.

There have been two main thrusts in this effort. The first has been to curate a database and knowledge graph describing connections between environmental conservation and the food system in California.  The figure below shows an extract from this database illustrating the network of organizations and programs around the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Project. The data for this knowledge graph are available for download from https://github.com/PPODschema/PPOD_CA.

. The second major thrust has been to develop data schemas and ontologies for describing the PPOD pattern. We have created a GitHub organization to host this work which is at the site https://github.com/PPODschema/.
