Environmental Faculty Fellows and Scholars
Our Environmental Faculty Fellows and Scholars Program supports scholars – from undergraduate and graduate students to faculty and professional researchers – throughout their careers at UC Davis. With this program we’re building a professional development and mentorship network of scholars engaged in collaborative and transformative environmental research.
In partnership with the UC Davis Environmental and Climate Justice Hub, we also offer Environmental and Climate Justice Faculty Fellow and Environmental and Climate Justice Scholars opportunities as part of the program. Information about each of these opportunities can be found below.

Meet the 2024-25 Earth Scholars and Environmental and Climate Justice Scholars here!
Earth Scholars (Applications Closed)
The Earth Scholars program is designed for graduate students who advance progress on the Institute of the Environment’s thematic pillars and initiatives.
Each Earth Scholar is awarded $8,000 to work toward implementing environmental and climate solutions. Like Environmental Fellows and Sustainability Scholars, Earth Scholars are encouraged to pursue projects that bridge disciplines and advance environmental justice.
Throughout each year, Earth Scholars will have opportunities to meet with communication experts to learn how to best translate science to the public. Each Earth Scholar recipient is also expected to present their progress to the public at the end of the year.
Environmental and Climate Justice Scholars (Applications Closed)
This opportunity is offered by the Environmental and Climate Justice Hub at the UC Davis Institute of the Environment. Successful proposals will involve environmental studies and/or sciences research that clearly contributes to environmental justice, including the resolution of environmental inequalities or the improvement of environmental health.
For questions about the application process, please reach out to, environment@ucdavis.edu
Sustainability Scholars (Applications Closed)
Undergraduate Sustainability Scholars are each awarded $2,000 for work related to the Institute of the Environment’s thematic pillars and initiatives.
Sustainability Scholars are organized into sustainability action research teams focusing on projects that provide immersive experiences addressing urgent environmental and climate problems. Student teams are mentored by an Environmental Fellow or other UC Davis faculty and professional researchers and one to two Earth Scholars. Together they partner with campus and community stakeholders to investigate sustainability and environmental justice issues.
Environmental Faculty Fellows & Environmental and Climate Justice Faculty Fellows (Applications Closed)
The Environmental Faculty Fellows program is a powerful tool for growing our community of scholars and increasing the impact of science on society.
Faculty Fellows will receive $10,000 of unrestricted funding to advance their research and/or to use for professional development. Each fellow will be encouraged to interact with graduate scholars (Climate and Environmental Justice Scholars or Earth Scholars) through the program’s networking activities, as well as will have the opportunity to mentor a graduate scholar(s) in their research. The fellows will also have the opportunity to mentor a small team of two to four undergraduate Sustainability Scholars. Applications from early and mid-career faculty are particularly encouraged.
We are offering two opportunities to participate:
- The Environmental and Climate Justice Faculty Fellow Program (two fellows)
- The Environmental Faculty Fellow Program (three fellows)
